Water Quality Announcement – Update

July 20, 2012

The problem that GVMA experienced earlier with our potassium permanganate injection pump has been corrected and the Yearound water tanks are in the process of being refilled. All water currently being discharged into the mains is free of the high levels of potassium permanganate that caused the pink discoloration earlier today. As the permanganate that entered the lines comes in contact with the iron and manganese in those lines it will combine with those minerals and cause them to precipitate out of the water. This process could cause orange or brown discoloring of the water. We have been in contact with PADEP and they have advised that the problem with the potassium permanganate is more of an aesthetic issue than one of health and safety. However, out of an abundance of caution, their recommendation is that the pink water not be used for drinking or cooking until it begins to clear. If the water is clear at your location it can be used for all purposes. We will continue to monitor water quality throughout the weekend and flush lines as needed. We apologize for any inconvenience that this situation may cause.
